Retraining and civilian employment opportunities for ATO/JFO veterans

Returning to peaceful life and getting a job or even rediscovering themselves and what they want to do moving into the future can be a tough call for many ATO/JFO veterans. And it really helps when there’s someone by their side ready to support them throughout the transition. Reintegration program “Cyberdefenders” seeks to accomplish just that by offering Ukrainian veterans an opportunity to learn new skills and start a career in tech field.

People returning from the battlefield always require professional assistance in overcoming effects of the post-traumatic stress disorder. This disorder is a common reaction for every person who has gone through traumatic events like those. In this case, qualified psychological assistance to ATO veterans and their families might be the most effective.

According to the study “Effectiveness of mobile teams of social and psychosocial assistance to combatants” by the UN and the Ukrainian Public Health Foundation, most of those who took an active part in hostilities needed psychological support upon returning from the ATO zone. That’s about 57% of veterans. This goes to show how important assistance to ATO/JFO participants and their families can really be.

The same study found that the main manifestations of psychological post-traumatic stress disorder include family conflicts (54%), stress, including loss of appetite and sleep, and anxiety (24%), violent outbursts that are difficult to control (12%), desire to commit suicide or inflict self-harm (6%), excessive use of psychoactive substances (4%).

However, it takes a lot of courage and strength to accept that you have a problem and you need someone else to help you deal with it.

Ukrainian veterans to meet with cybersecurity specialists under the Cybersecurity Professional Development and Reintegration program for ATO/JFO veterans “Cyberdefenders”

Cybersecurity Professional Development and Reintegration program for ATO/JFO veterans “Cyberdefenders” will be launched in May under the initiative of 2019 CRDF Global in Ukraine, Moldova, and Western Balkans to improve cyber infrastructure and cybersecurity workforces, supported by the U.S. Department of State’s Office of the Coordinator of U.S. Assistance to Europe and Eurasia.

The launch of the project will start with two meetings between the cybersecurity experts and those who wish to become ones – Ukrainian ATO/JFO veterans, willing to continue defending their homeland in a different role. The purpose of these events is to introduce former servicemen to a prestigious and one of the most in-demand careers in the world, as well as to explain the prospects and opportunities it may open up for them.

We are proud to announce the first call for applications for our new Cybersecurity Professional Development and Reintegration program for ATO/JFO veterans “Cyberdefenders”. Program participants will receive a unique opportunity to start a career in cybersecurity, a crucially important sphere for strengthening Ukraine’s defensive capabilities. We assist veterans along their reintegration journey through a series of consecutive components: training with the best professionals in the field, social adaptation (mentoring and psychological support), and employment assistance.
